He Risks His Life for Persimmons — What Will Grandma Make With Them?
About this episode
A mountain village persimmon harvest on slippery cliffs, followed by traditional cooking and outdoor food preparation. Grandpa gathers the fruit, and Grandma turns it into winter preserves and pastries. Grandpa climbs wet, slippery rocks to gather persimmons growing high above the valley and brings the harvest home to Grandma. From pointed persimmons to sweet korolek, each variety has its place in their mountain kitchen. Grandma prepares an unusual persimmon pickle, while carefully selected whole fruits go into wooden crates for winter. Branches carrying fresh persimmons are laid beside dry hay in the storage shed. The korolek becomes thick homemade jam, cooked slowly over a wood fire. Grandma uses it as a filling for homemade pastries, then bakes them in a clay oven. After a demanding day, they share the warm pastries over evening tea.
